National Student Debt Counselors Network Interest Form

About This Initiative

The Community Service Society of New York (CSS) has received a Lumina Foundation grant to support organizations across the U.S. interested in learning how to provide direct assistance to student loan borrowers in their respective communities. In 2019, CSS created the Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program (EDCAP). EDCAP is a first-in-the-nation program model dedicated to helping student loan borrowers across New York state manage and, when possible, eliminate their student debt. This initiative will bring together a select group of organizations nationwide to benefit from CSS’s expertise in providing direct assistance to consumers and EDCAP’s comprehensive student loan core curriculum, monthly substantive trainings on relevant topics, policy updates, and technical support. Participants will also gain access to EDCAP’s resources and be part of a nationwide learning community!

Eligibility

This initiative is intended for nonprofit or government organizations. Participants can include individuals from nonprofits, legal services agencies, state-based student loan ombuds offices, and city programs or initiatives focused on financial literacy, like Empowerment Centers.

PLEASE COMPLETE ONE INTEREST FORM PER AGENCY

Contact Carolina Rodriguez, EDCAP Director, if you have any questions: or 212-614-5457.

Participant Commitment

The initiative will begin with a kickoff event and core training sessions in October and November 2024, followed by monthly network meetings from December 2024 through September 2025.  All activities will be conducted virtually.

Participants are expected to complete the core curriculum training. If an individual cannot attend the live training sessions, they will have the opportunity to view the recordings. Attending the monthly meetings is highly encouraged, especially for individuals seeking to provide direct assistance to borrowers as they will learn about the latest student loan updates and get technical support on cases.

Agency Commitment

For agencies with more than one participant, we ask that you designate a key contact person. Additionally, we request that at least one representative from each organization attend the monthly meetings and commit to sharing that information with their colleagues.

A comprehensive calendar with set monthly meetings and training topics will be provided in advance.
